Everyone agreed that Richard was an unusual high school student.
He seemed to take a deep and abiding joy in subjects that intimidated his classmates. For instance, he relished the challenge of performing in the New York High School Math Meets, and he always seemed to perform superbly in these extremely competitive, high-pressure events. But then, why shouldn’t he? At the tender age of 15, Richard had mastered trigonometry and integral and differential calculus. In the following years, he quickly absorbed conics and complex numbers.
