Everything is connected
Throughout this book we have stressed what we call ‘holistic library service.’ This truly means that everything is connected. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze how holistic library service is created and delivered. We will also discuss how a quality collection relies on a holistic approach.
Using the four areas of library service emphasized by Sandra Nelson, author of The New Planning for Results: a streamlined approach (2001), we can illustrate how various areas of library service are related. The four areas Nelson emphasizes are staff, collection, facility, and technology. Each piece contributes to a quality collection, and also to the quality of service in each of the other areas.
