Preface

1.    Lee (1966) used the term “self-reference criteria” to characterize our unconscious reference to our own cultural values, which can mislead us when we deal with people from other cultures. Hofstede examined cross-cultural differences on dimensions such as power distance, individualism versus collectivism, and uncertainty avoidance (1980a), and explored the extent to which American theories apply abroad (1980b). A classic textbook on the subject by Adler and Gundersen (2008) examines national culture, workplace behavior across cultures, and other cross-cultural issues.
