While writing this book, I talked to several colleagues about their experiences and challenges in engaging their teams. While the techniques I’ve introduced form the basis of solid engagement-building efforts, some situations require a refined approach to unleash the potential within your employees. You may be gliding smoothly in your engagement dance until a new emcee takes over, you encounter someone who hates dancing, or you find the doors are locked and the dance floor will also become your sleeping quarters. Or, put in manager-speak, you encounter changes or an environment that make engagement seem like a distant hope or lost priority.
