Installing the OpenCms WAR File

As with most open-source projects, OpenCms is available in both source and binary releases. We will use the binary version. Download the 6.2 release (opencms_6.2.0.zip) from the OpenCms downloads page:

OpenCms, like most Java servlets, is packaged in a WAR (Web ARchive) file. A WAR file is a special kind of JAR file (which, in turn, is a special kind of ZIP file) that contains all the files necessary for running a Java servlet-based application. You can view the contents with standard JAR or ZIP tools. For example, to get a list of files in the archive, run jar -tf at a command line. In Tomcat, all WAR files are in the webapps/ directory (in $CATALINA_HOME/ ...
