If sending passwords in cleartext across the wire makes you nervous and you don’t have the infrastructure to support Kerberos or CRAM, then you can hack SSL support into IMAP as a quick workaround. To take advantage of SSL, you would of course have to use an IMAP client that supports SSL. Currently, your choices are narrow: Netscape Messenger and Outlook Express/Outlook 98.
