Nameserver order

One thing you may notice when you look at these results is that, even though a lot of these nameserver delegations appear to be named in alphabetical or numerical order, they are not necessarily returned in that order. It's a commonly held fallacy that nameservers are queried in listed order; they are not. We'll learn more about why they are not in this chapter.

TLD nameservers are authoritative for their own TLD, but for the most part they are populated with delegations. Delegations are nameserver records for all the child zones, otherwise known as a nameserver delegation, a DNS delegation, or a zone cut.
