Detracting

The use of the word ‘detracting’ as the title of this chapter is deploying it in the sense of being the opposite of ‘attracting’, used as the title of Chapter 3.1. Detracting can be approached negatively or positively.

The negative approach

Perhaps the best, and probably the easiest way of detracting attention from a site is to use the method known to nearly every parent in the world and that is, simply, to present a diversionary attraction rather than saying ‘don’t’.
