Preface

Large projects have been with us since the beginning of civilization. Building the Egyptian Sphinx, or the Great Wall of China, required a complex set of skills, tasks, planning, and resources. These projects were completed with tremendous determination and somewhat “unlimited” resources. The control of these projects was done with more force than one can imagine today. Nevertheless, these projects still required the management of material, people, and time. Since these undertakings were sponsored by the rulers of the time, budget was not necessarily a limiting factor.
