8. Managers or leaders?

Within the corporate arena I believe that it is possible to make a clear distinction between managers and those individuals who many people call leader. I suggest the following distinction:

Leader Type Principal Characteristics
Type 1 The Guide Event (change) maker Comfortable with radical change Able to influence the entire organisation Charismatic (übermensch [13] ) Attracts voluntary followers Represent the whole to the parts
Type 2 The Commander Limited to narrow, functional and incremental change Executive/guardian Operate like military commanders Represent their part to the whole
Type 3 The Icon/Model Opinion and/or style leader Operate like religious evangelists Represent a single dimension
