Chapter 5. Putting Words in My Mouth

Lettering, in comics, is how we give our characters a voice and our narration a tone. Unlike hand-lettering, computer text is always legible. The downside is that sometimes it looks too mechanical, especially with fonts not designed with comics in mind. In this chapter, we'll learn what we can do with text in Manga Studio, and more importantly, what we cannot do. Along the way, we'll learn about some quirks that comic lettering has and some basic proofreading tips and hints.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Introducing comic fonts
  • Type of lettering in comics
  • Creating a script
  • Using Manga Studio's lettering tool
  • Working with text areas and avoiding some common problems
