“More” doesn’t excite the troops

If maximizing current profits does not guarantee an enduring business, why do so many leaders focus there? They are not stupid, nor destructive in most cases, so what are they thinking? We know that top-executive compensation at publicly held companies includes incentives to maximize stock value. Those values usually rise with increasing profits. The individuals on the board of directors, who set those compensation schemes, are not stupid nor destructive either. So why do they reinforce near-term thinking?

Primarily because most of them think that is their job. There is good reason for them to believe that.
