Introduction
This chapter has two focuses. First, it scopes existing travel patterns within market towns. Travel data shows such towns to be car-dependent and thus to be environmentally and socially less sustainable than they might be, with little to suggest that this situation is changing. Possible reasons for this are explored. Second, policy and service delivery mechanisms are investigated through literature review. This analysis highlights the problems facing market towns, such as road vehicle traffic and its external costs, and the potential for initiatives in public transport, such as on-demand services and innovations in promoting green modes of transport.
