If you want to sell the most records (or CDs or downloads or whatever the medium), you might think it logical that you want to appeal to the widest audience possible, right?
You might get lucky enough to appeal to the widest audience possible, but that’s usually a phenomenon that happens to you, not something that happens by design. Trying to hit the largest possible target market in one fell swoop is like trying to take down an entire forest with a bow and arrow. At least this analogy has a couple of the right words contained within it—target market. And that’s what you need to do—you need to target your market.
