On November 30th, 2022, OpenAI — an artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory — launched a beta version of the AI conversational interface named ChatGPT. ChatGPT represented a new paradigm for humans interacting with technology, a paradigm anchored in the ability to communicate with a computer by using everyday language (also known as natural language processing, NLP) to get detailed, specific responses in real time. ChatGPT quickly became the fastest growing application in history (at the time) with 100 million active users signed up by January 2023.
