The time has come that your application needs to work with raw resources. A good example of that is fonts. Each font application we use will be an individual file stored in the assets folder. The assets folder is a subdirectory of main directory or directory that represents the build variant. Besides fonts, it's common that here you store txt files, mp3, waw, mid, and similar. You can't store these types of files in the res directory.
