Storyboarding is the process of using illustrations to pre-visualize shots, character blocking, lighting, set design, and camera placement and movement. Assembling the illustrations in sequence provides a rough feel for the emotional and narrative flow of a scene.
While storyboarding isn’t required for the direction or shooting of a scene, many (if not most) directors and cinematographers find storyboards helpful for planning scenes and sequences. Clients and producers may require storyboards as one of the deliverables on a project and may desire review and input on these storyboards.
