STSADM and PowerShell

Why should you learn about managing SharePoint Foundation with STSADM and PowerShell? Some tasks are unique to the command line; others, such as bulk management, require scripting to perform efficiently. (And you can impress your friends at parties.)

Using the command line is still a very useful and powerful approach for many SharePoint activities, so much so that Microsoft continues to provide the traditional, DOS-like STSADM. With SharePoint Foundation, however, Microsoft officially recommends that you use PowerShell, because it intends to deprecate STSADM in the future. To that end, Microsoft has developed a full set of PowerShell cmdlets (pronounced “commandlets”).
