Sustainable Design
11.1 Introduction
Not too long ago, engineering design focuses only on in-service requirements such as function and strength. Today, design must also consider stringent environmental requirements and the handling of products after their “death,” or end of life cycle. What do you do with products after they reach the end of their useful life? Even during their useful life, products must conform to limited natural resources and must be evaluated, especially in terms of energy consumption and pollution.
