Chapter 3. Interoperability with Systems Management Server 2003

Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 was a major upgrade to prior versions of the product, and with the upgrade came much pain. There were core infrastructure shifts moving from a "batch processing mode" to web services. Along with the infrastructure changes came client changes as well. The notion of doing delta inventories and sending that XML blob up to a web service, or Management Point, over HTTP port 80 was the "new way." That allowed SMS 2003 to become much more scalable than previous versions. At the end of the day, the product growing pains were worth the wait. We finally had a solid configuration product in which all the features worked very well.
