Hyper-V and Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 have built-in support for VSS by implementing a VSS writer. In this section, we will concentrate on Hyper-V backup operations. For VMware ESX host backup, VMware has published a Knowledge Base article at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1355. This article contains information on backup technologies and compatible commercial tools for backing up ESX Server virtual machines. To back up Virtual Server, you can use backup software that supports the Virtual Server VSS writer in the same way that you would back up the Hyper-V VSS writer as outlined in this section.
