8.4. Importing Virtual Appliances

A very useful feature of vCenter Server is the ability to import virtual appliances. A virtual appliance is a specialized virtual machine with a dedicated purpose. vCenter Server can browse virtual appliances that exist as files on your local disk or local network, or vCenter Server can import virtual appliances from the VMware Virtual Appliance Marketplace. If you browse the Virtual Appliance Marketplace at www.vmware.com/appliances, you will find that appliances exist across a multitude of categories, including the following:

  • Administration

  • App/Web Server

  • Communications

  • Database

  • Networking

  • Security
