Chapter 5. Migrating the Existing User Data

When users get new systems, they want to have as much of their existing data and settings as possible restored on the new system. And if you can't do that, instead of being happy about the shiny new toys, they may get a little unpleasant. Thankfully, Microsoft includes some good tools you can use to restore your users' data. The Windows Easy Transfer tool can be used to transfer user state data on a system-by-system basis. You wouldn't use it for all the users in your organization, but you can use it for systems you manually migrate, such as systems used by some executives.

The Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) includes the User State Migration Tool (USMT) that can be used in large organizations. ...
