Chapter 13. Taking Advantage of Volume Licensing

Volume licensing is often used in environments where multiple installations of the same product take place. When you employ volume licensing, you use a volume license key (VLK) to activate the product.

VLKs have been exploited by software pirates since their introduction. By using VLKs they found an easy way to distribute the software and have it activated as well. Each VLK is uniquely linked to the company which purchased it. Therefore, if that key is exploited, Microsoft could hold the company responsible and ultimately block the key from being used in the future.
