Chapter 4. Installing Windows Server 2008: Basics
A great house begins with a great foundation; likewise, a great Windows Server begins with a great installation. Chapters 1 through 3 helped you understand how to create a basic network setup. This chapter takes you though the process of installing Windows Server 2008.
The element that differentiates a good installation from a great installation is planning. After all, you wouldn't just start pouring concrete before you planned where you were going to put your new house, would you? The first time you go through this chapter is actually a planning phase — you should read the chapter with the idea of thinking about all of the tasks you need to perform, before you actually do them. You should determine which edition of Windows Server 2008 best meets your needs, determine the installation technique that works best in your situation, define the roles your server needs to accomplish a given task, and then specify the features needed to extend the server to meet certain requirements.
This chapter focuses on a basic installation. The installation will meet the needs of anyone with general requirements. What I'm trying to accomplish in this chapter is to answer these questions:
