Chapter 16. Corrosion and Wear

Corrosion is the slow degradation of materials due to chemical interaction with the environment. All metals, except gold, corrode; they do so because they tend to a thermodynamically more stable state: that of an oxide or hydroxide. Corrosion in liquid media occurs by electrochemical reactions as in batteries. Standard electrochemical potentials of metals are measured in a standard cell where the reference is the hydrogen electrode. Metals that establish a negative potential with respect to the standard are anodic and tend to be corroded. Metals that establish a positive potential are noble and tend not to corrode.
