FUTURE OUTLOOK

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is not a new technology. It has, however, enjoyed very little commercial success to date. The 1970s and 1980s saw heightened activity worldwide, particularly in the United States, with many interesting laboratory and field-scale experiments being conducted with the aim of unraveling the potential of UCG. A combination of factors, including concerns regarding safety and environmental impact, and dropping oil prices led to a waning of interest in UCG.
