11.14. Performance Indices

The performance indices for specifying the transient response of a second order system to a unit step input are as follows:

  1. Delay Time, td: It is the time required for the response to reach 50 per cent of the final value the very first time.
  2. Rise time, tr: It is the time required for the response to rise from 10 to 90 per cent of the final value in cases of over-damped or critically-damped second-order systems, or 0 to 100 per cent of the final value in case of the under-damped second-order system.
  3. Peak time, tp: It is the time required for the response to reach the first peak of the overshoot.
