UV Maps

When a polygon model is created from scratch in Maya, it carries no UV information. That is, there are no UV points when examining the surface in the UV Texture Editor. In addition, the surface is unable to carry a texture and will render out as a solid color. Some polygon models start out as polygon primitives. As such, they automatically receive an initial UV mapping. However, numerous applications of various polygon editing tools leave the UVs chaotic and unusable (see Figure 5.5). This results in stretched and illegible texture maps appearing in the render.
