Skill 8 Identify the Author’s Purpose

Writers have various reasons for writing. Sometimes the purpose is simply to record events. At other times the purpose is to inform readers about something, perhaps an interesting person, place, or idea. One writer might write in order to spur readers to take some action. Another writer might write in order to make readers feel afraid of something. A writer might write in order to entertain, to give an opinion on a topic, to instruct, or to present a different point of view.

When you read something, think about the reason the writer has decided to craft that particular text.
