6.3. Introduction to Single Sign-On (SSO) Authentication
The big advantage of using SSO in SharePoint Server 2007 is that you can allow your users to access back-end or external data sources from within SharePoint without having to authenticate to the outside source. This includes users having the ability to view, create, and modify information on these sources based on the mapping between the user credentials to the external sources.
SSO requires you to be using Windows credentials for user accounts in SharePoint.
