This chapter covers the testing and calibration of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). The operating principles and applications of CMMs are first discussed, followed by the principles of measuring heads (MHs) and touch trigger probes. The performance verification of MHs and touch trigger probes are described including the use of new artifacts.
Methods for the full geometric accuracy calibration of CMMs are covered, including laser calibration against a reference or master machine. Performance verification using both artifacts and lasers is also covered in detail. Finally the design of error correction mechanisms using piezomechanical correction techniques is proposed.
