Abstract
This chapter introduces the background knowledge of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), including the history of discovery and commonly synthesized techniques. The merits and demerits of arc-discharge, laser ablation, and chemical vapor deposition techniques are discussed to show their application in mass production and high-quality CNTs. The molecular structures as well as their mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of CNTs are briefly introduced. The general development and commercialization of CNTs in nanoscience and nanotechnology are also presented.
