Chapter sixteen

Fault finding

Objectives

The objectives of this chapter are that, after studying it, the reader should be able to:

  • Recognise the techniques used to identify faults in microprocessor-based systems, including both hardware and software.
  • Explain the use of emulation and simulation.
  • Explain how fault finding can be achieved with PLC systems.

16.1 Fault-detection techniques

This chapter is a brief consideration of the problems of fault detection with measurement, control and data communication systems. For details of the fault-finding checks required for specific systems or components, the manufacturer’s manuals should be used.

There are a number of techniques that can be used to detect faults:

  1. Replication checks
