Dynamic responses of systems

Objectives

The objectives of this chapter are that, after studying it, the reader should be able to:

  • Model dynamic systems by means of differential equations.
  • Determine the outputs of first-order systems to inputs and determine time constants.
  • Determine the outputs of second-order systems to inputs and identify the under-damped, critically damped and over-damped conditions.
  • Describe the characteristics of second-order system responses in terms of rise time, overshoot, subsidence ratio, decrement and settling time.
