1 Introduction

The aim of this article is to outline the present status of mediatization research and its relevance for sociolinguistics. Such an undertaking is always selective as it is impossible to discuss a whole field of research in just a few pages. To reflect this problem, in the following I want to focus more on the main lines of discussion within mediatization research.
