Chapter 3 – VAT

With a business based in the UK you can’t avoid thinking about VAT.

Whether or not you might have to register for UK VAT is covered in my earlier book Refreshingly Simple Finance for Small Business.

If you are, or should be, registered for UK VAT, then there are four different areas you might have to look at if you’re trading overseas. This depends on whether you’re:

  1. selling goods overseas, and/or
  2. buying goods from overseas, and/or
  3. selling services overseas, and/or
  4. buying services from overseas.

VAT operates across the EU. You might have to register your business for VAT in another EU country, as well as in the UK.
