In the annals of companies that failed to innovate in time, I consider WordPerfect’s plummet from the most beloved word-processing software in the nineties to a fringe player today as one of the saddest falls. That’s because I can trace back where I started to get really interested in technology from using the Reveal Codes feature in WordPerfect. The feature gives a behind-the-scenes look into the codes that make up the formatting of a document. Understanding how the codes worked helped me learn basic HyperText Markup Language (HTML), the code behind web pages, through self-study. Once I learned how to develop websites, I started using Microsoft FrontPage, the precursor to the HTML editor for Microsoft’s SharePoint services. My exposure to the collaboration capabilities in SharePoint eventually led me to Office 365 and now, Microsoft 365.
