The phrase “heat wave” didn’t hit me until I virtually cooked in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia in the summer of 2021. My husband and I were in the unfortunate situation of staying temporarily at a house with no cooling for several days when the heat dome enveloped the Pacific Northwest. There were times when it was hotter inside the house than it was outside — at midnight. If the situation hadn’t been so oppressive, it would have been funny to watch people speeding from store to store looking for air-conditioning units that quickly disappeared and paying premium prices for old units that sellers brought down from the attic and dusted off.
