The phrase “heat wave” didn’t hit me until I virtually cooked in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia in the summer of 2021. My husband and I were in the unfortunate situation of staying temporarily at a house with no cooling for several days when the heat dome enveloped the Pacific Northwest. There were times when it was hotter inside the house than it was outside — at midnight. If the situation hadn’t been so oppressive, it would have been funny to watch people speeding from store to store looking for air-conditioning units that quickly disappeared and paying premium prices for old units that sellers brought down from the attic and dusted off. When a friend saw my social media posting showing the temperature in our dining room had hit 104 degrees Fahrenheit, she called to say we could have two units she had stored after installing central cooling.
