I am so unfamiliar with sports that once, when I was late for my son’s soccer game, I ended up sitting with the parents of the kids on the opposing team and cheering whenever they did in an attempt to appear as if I knew what was going on. It wasn’t until I saw my son glaring at me and motioning me to move to the other group of parents that I realized I had been rooting for the wrong team!

Yet, despite the missing sports chip in my brain, my favorite poem since grade school is the dramatic and humorous poem about a fictional baseball game entitled “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. The thirteen-stanza poem is full of built-up suspense and heightened expectations for a great comeback for a losing team centered on the mighty Casey getting a turn at the bat. After much fanfare and drama, Casey finally advanced to the bat, so full of confidence and promise that he decides not to swing at the first two pitches.
