Stores and Storage Groups

When talking about Exchange Server storage, it’s important that you understand what is meant by the terms store and storage group. In Exchange, a store is the entity in which user mailboxes are located. A store also has its own associated database file in which mailbox contents are saved. Storage groups, first introduced in Exchange 2000 Server as a means to achieve more reasonable scalability, are collections of individual stores. The version and edition of Exchange server in use at your organization dictates the level to which you can utilize stores and storage groups. Table 3-1, which you saw earlier, outlines the storage capabilities of various versions of Exchange Server.
