Complete server backups

Microsoft’s focus on database mobility and the break in the link between database and mailbox server has some consequences for backups. In effect:

  • Backups are taken on a per-volume level. All databases and transaction logs found on the volume are included in the backup.

  • The backups are intended to recover a database or databases following a disk or server failure. In the case of server failure, the Exchange-related configuration data are recovered from Active Directory by running the Exchange Setup program in recovery mode (see Chapter 2). Separate steps are then taken to recover the data hosted on the server; only one of these steps involves the restore of databases.
