Exchange 2007 introduced the transport dumpster as a method for retaining copies of messages that might be required for recovery purposes following an outage on a clustered (CCR) mailbox server. The idea is to ensure that copies of messages exist that can be replayed if they were in transit when a cluster outage occurred. The implementation worked, but a number of issues were discovered in production. Exchange 2007 maintains a transport dumpster per storage group. This isn’t a problem on small servers that host one or two storage groups but complexity and load increases on large servers, especially those that approach Exchange 2007’s limit of 50 storage groups.
