Sharing policies were introduced in Exchange 2010 to provide a mechanism for Exchange to control how users share data such as calendar free and busy information between organizations. Federation between two Exchange organizations requires either the on-site deployment of the Microsoft Federation Gateway, which acts as a trusted broker between the two organizations to ensure that data can pass between them in a safe and secure manner, or access to the Microsoft online version of the Microsoft Federation Gateway.
