High availability beyond Hyper-V

Making a virtual machine highly available is not the only way to enable high availability for a service or application. Many server-grade applications include their own high availability features; in fact, Hyper-V is one of them. Others are Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange Server. SQL provides mirrored, AlwaysOn, and clustered database capabilities. Exchange Server offers database availability groups (DAG) and lagged database copies. These capabilities can provide fault tolerance; a guest can be lost without interrupting application availability. Research the applications you plan to place on your servers to see if the vendor has their own protection methodology.
