Traditional MCUs, however, have previously provided features that Lync did not include. Until Lync Server 2013, only active-speaker switching for video was available in conferences, which meant that only one video stream could be seen at a time. The only exception was if a participant used a Polycom CX5000 device (previously called the Microsoft Roundtable), and then a panoramic room view would be shown in addition to the active speaker.

Third-party MCUs are capable of showing multiple video streams in a single conference, which is referred to as continuous presence.
