Chapter 9. Editing Lengthy Documents

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • Creating and modifying templates

  • Using styles

  • Adding footnotes and indices

  • Formatting headers and footers

Creating a short document can be as easy as opening a new document and typing away. Formatting a long document—one that might require page numbers, footnotes, or an index—is a trickier proposition. Fortunately, Word makes it easy to automatically paginate, customize headers and footers, keep track of footnotes, and even generate a table of contents and an index. This allows you to concentrate primarily on your content rather than its presentation.

If you're someone who works in the world of lengthy documents frequently, styles and templates can be an even greater time-saver. This chapter explains how to use Word features that are helpful in formatting and handling long documents and how to use templates and styles to make the process even easier in the future.
