Lync 2013 looks and works a bit differently than the other Office 2013 applications. For one thing, Lync takes up only a portion of your screen. This is by design; that way you can view other files on your desktop while Lync is open along the left side of the screen. Lync also does not use the ribbon. Instead, it features its own variety of tools and settings, optimized for communicating. From the top down in the window, you can do the following:
Manage various functions of your account such as your status and availability.
Choose what action you want to perform in Lync, including setting options.
Find contacts and choose how Lync lists contacts, such as arranging the list by groups, status, or relationships.
