Opening new files

Many of the basic tasks you’ll perform in your Office programs will be similar from app to app. You’ll need to know how to open a new file in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher, for example. You can easily open a new file on the Start screen for the different apps, and you can also click the File tab and then choose New to start the process.

Open a new file

  1. Launch the Office app you want to use.

  2. On the app Start screen, click Blank Document to open a new, blank file.

  3. Alternatively, click and enter a type of template for which to search.

  4. Scroll through the results list.

  5. Click the template that you want to use as the basis for the new file.
