24.2. Using SharePoint Backup and Restore Features

As with non-SharePoint Web sites, the SharePoint Designer backup and restore options for SharePoint sites are available in the Site Administration menu. The user interface is pretty straightforward, and you can follow these steps to back up your Web site:

  1. In SharePoint Designer, open the Web site you want to back up.

  2. Choose Site Administration Backup Web Site to open the Backup Web Site dialog box, as shown in Figure 24.3.

  3. You can choose to include subsites by clicking the Include subsites in archive check box. The Advanced button allows you to change the location where the backup files are temporarily stored before they're downloaded to your local machine.

    NOTE

    By default, the SharePoint Designer backup operation stores the backup files in a hidden document library of your SharePoint Web site before they can be downloaded to the SharePoint Designer client machine.
